Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:
The program is broken down like this. First, the student selects a book from the Accelerated Reading (AR) list. Our library has many books and I also have tons in the classroom. Then s/he will take a computerized comprehension test on the book. The test consists of 3 to 10 questions.
A point value is assigned to each book. If the child passes the test, s/he receives points for that book, which at the first grade level is either a half a point or 1 point. If some answers are wrong on a test, the point value goes down. The computer keeps an on-going record of progress. I will send a progress report home with the report card, or sooner at your request. One thing to be careful about is the overall percentage. Students must be able to have at least 80% correct. So if they are getting more than 2 wrong consistently, we have to watch them closely. First graders are so eager to take tests, but it is essential that they are able to not just read the story, but thoroughly understand it.
Since the tests that are taken are based on both points and comprehension, it is important that your child really understands what is read when they are reading to you at home. It is a good idea to ask your child a few questions after it has been read, to make sure that the story is understood.
We have quarterly reward activities that are started after the 2nd quarter. Students are only allowed to participate if they have reached their quarterly AR goal in both points and percentage correct. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
